On my way to the studio in my VW bus, I stopped at the light on Hollywood and Cahuenga. There was a lady walking the street with a lip color and an outfit that could blind you like the Vegas Strip. That didn't deter me from thinking for a flash that some physical contact with her would be nice, followed immediately by the thought that it would make me feel even more empty. I wrote the lyric to this song between Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard. I got to the studio and went straight to the piano to find the chords. I thought 'my lord, this is a Country song', but still way beyond lonely.

Just The Way
Lyrics
There was a girl on the street
With an oil painted face
She asked me if I’d like to go for a ride
I asked her why she’d singled me out
And she told me that I looked lonely
I said
Lady I’m way beyond lonely
It take more than a roll to make me feel whole
And I know that the past just ain’t comin’ back
And that’s just the way love goes
As the pictures I keep
Are slowly erased
I wake in the night just to look for the signs
Is there a scent in the air like that of her hair
If I spoke out would she hear me
Baby I’m way beyond lonely
It take more than a roll to make me feel whole
And I know that the past just ain’t comin’ back
And that’s just the way love goes
(solo)
Lady I’m way beyond lonely
It take more than a roll to make me feel whole
And I know that the past just ain’t comin’ back
And that’s just the way love goes
Baby I’m way beyond lonely
It take more than a roll to make me feel whole
And I know that the past just ain’t comin’ back
And that’s just the way love goes
And that’s just the way love goes
And that’s just the way love goes
